Neuropsychological Function and Brain Imaging

Part of the book series: Critical Issues in Neuropsychology ((CINP))

Abstract

The cerebral localization not only of elementary sensory or motor functions but also of complex mental activities and human behavior has been dominated traditionally by neuroanatomic concepts derived from correlative clinicopathological studies. However, these morphologically biased views culminating in Kleist’s largely speculative brain charts (Kleist, 1937) lacked the physiological dimension. In contrast, physiological experiments with intraoperative electrical stimulation of the cerebral cortex, as performed most systematically by Penfield and Rasmussen (1950), provided only sketchy information on the highly complex regional interactions associated with neuropsychological functions. For a while, this dilemma favored by methodological one-sidedness caused a resurgence of the old universalistic notion that localization is an artificial observer-made attribute of the brain (Gooddy & McKissock, 1951). Recent interdisciplinary research, though, has shown much evidence to the contrary, but at a more sophisticated conceptual level of stochastic cybernetics.
