Abstract

In general, screening programs for the early detection of cancer have not been as successful as was once expected. Two areas of success are cervical cytology, which has almost certainly reduced mortality from cervical cancer, and screening for breast cancer, which can be helpful for women past the age of 50. On the other hand, breast cancer screening at younger ages has been of no apparent benefit, there is no demonstrated value in testing for occult blood in the stool to detect colon cancer, screening for cancer of the urinary bladder is of little value because of the limited range of treatment options, several well-designed trials for early diagnosis of lung cancer have not yet been successful in reducing mortality, and there has been no benefit shown for screening of persons at high risk for thyroid cancer.
