Abstract
Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial disease which is highly infectious. The infection primarily affects the respiratory system, resulting in paroxysmal coughing and sudden forceful inspirations. These sudden inspirations give a high-pitched crowing sound or ‘whoop’ which gives the disease its common name.
