Abstract

This chapter deals with challenges concerning the treatment of patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Changes in peritoneal transport characteristics with time and decreasing ultrafiltration capacity is a frequent complication in PD patients, which may result in fluid overload. Protein-energy wasting is common in PD patients and needs careful evaluation and treatment. Diabetic PD patients need special attention because of the continuous glucose absorption from the dialysate, which may contribute to poor metabolic control. The glucose absorption may also contribute to obesity and an atherogenic lipid profile. This chapter reviews these issues and summarizes the treatment options concerning these problems.
