Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States (1). In 2002, 148,000 new cases and 57,000 deaths were estimated to occur from this disease. CRC incidence and mortality rates increase with age, markedly so after age 60. Overall CRC death rates decreased by 1.8% per year from 1992 to 1998 (2); however, the death rates for CRC remain higher for African-Americans than for other ethnic groups.
