Abstract

In a general pediatric intensive care unit that includes cardiac surgical patients, the most common cardiac infections encountered are postsurgical complications. Patients who are acutely ill with endocarditis, myocarditis, or pericarditis may also require intensive care. After immediate stabilization, the general principles of taking a thorough history and considering patient exposures remains paramount. An integrated team approach, involving critical care specialists, infectious disease specialists, cardiologists, and surgeons, is vital to providing excellent care for these patients.
