Abstract
This chapter provides the theoretical background in probability theory and statistical estimation needed in this book. This is not meant as a first introduction to probability, however, and the reader is supposed to be familiar with the basics of probability theory. The main emphasis here is on the extension of the basic notions to multidimensional data.
