Rheumatology in Practice

Abstract

By “arthritis” we mean an inflammatory process in a joint. It can be caused by infectious agents lodged in the joint (septic arthritis), microcrystals that lead to the degranulation of neutrophils (microcrystalline arthritis), by an immunological reaction to remote infectious agents (reactive arthritis), or it can be of unknown cause, as is the case in most inflammatory joint diseases.
