Radar Meteorology at the National Severe Storms Laboratory, 1964–1986

  • Chapter
Radar in Meteorology

Abstract

This chapter relates the background to the establishment of the National Severe Storms Laboratory and the development of radar meteorology science and technology at NSSL from 1964, when the Laboratory was organized in essentially its present form, to the 1980s. Radar highlights during the period beyond 1980 are noted in section 6. This paper is far from a history of the National Severe Storms Laboratory as a whole, since weather radar is only part (albeit an important part) of the overall laboratory program.
