Abstract
An appraisal of pile load test interpretation methods for their suitability in unit- gravity model test was carried out in this research. A replicate of the full scale Constant Rate of Penetration (CRP) pile load capacity test was simulated in the laboratory using model piles and reconstituted Kaolin S300 soil model. Eight model tests were carried out on long and short model piles. The measured capacities, Qm of the piles were obtained from the load-settlement curve using six different interpretation methods and were compared with the predicted capacity, Qp calculated using pile static formula. The results revealed that Hansen 80% and Chin methods produced the best results for the model tests relative to the predicted capacity, Qp of the model piles. In contrast, the 10% of pile diameter displacement method yielded the lowest capacity values for the model piles. This implies that the capacity obtained by this method supposed to be used as a baseline value and not necessarily the actual capacity value for the piles. This study will serve as a yardstick for future researchers on model piles for their choice of suitable model pile load test interpretation method.
