Abstract

Particle therapy as proton or heavy ion therapy has several dosimetric and biological advantages over photon radiotherapy. To date, access to this treatment modality is limited, and treatment costs are still considerably higher than for standard photon radiotherapy.

However, particle therapy has shown promising results especially in locally advanced salivary gland cancers.

The chapter will provide an overview of physical and biological basics of particle radiotherapy in general and for malignant salivary gland tumours in particular. It will examine and discuss rationale and available clinical evidence for carbon ion and proton therapy in this challenging disease.
