Abstract
The rapid rise of the petrochemical industry was unique in the history of industrial innovation. The circumstances: shift to new, abundantly available raw materials, chemical engineering advancements and U.S. government investment in novel chemical plants during World War II. All were certainly propitious. And so a new industry came into being and experienced double digit growth in the 1950–1970 period. But then it ran into difficulties. And it became just another industry.
