Rural Racism in the Digital Age

Abstract

Concerns have been raised that the digitalisation of rural life has weakened social relations and caused greater hostilities between long-term rural residents who use social media to create community groups and those who participate online within these digital rural spaces but may not be deemed ‘local’. Drawing on a netnographic (digital ethnography) approach, this chapter builds upon and provides a novel contribution to the existing literature on rural racism by exploring the ways residents of a rural community in the south of England use the Internet to construct an online rural space through giving meaning to the forum as ‘rural’, and the extent to which this excludes and ‘others’ those with perceived differences, leading to targeted hate and victimisation for those individuals online.
