Abstract
In comparison to Malignant Social Psychology (MSP) behaviours, Kitwood describes Positive Person Work (PPW) which are positive interactions that promote dignity, respect and the uniqueness of the person, thus contributing to more positive experiences for people with dementia (Kitwood, Dementia reconsidered: the person comes first. Open University Press, Buckingham, 1997). Kitwood used PPW as part of a more complex tool known as dementia care mapping, which organisations can use to examine and challenge practice. Each of these is said to contribute to an environment where people with dementia feel empowered and are treated with dignity and respect. Person-centred care principles are the key philosophies central to the organisation’s values. This chapter examines these types of interactions and the significance that they have within practice.
