Abstract
In 1958, Werner Heisenberg, in his 57th year, jumped the shark. At the Max Planck centennial in Berlin, he presented what others would label his Weltformel (World Formula), a final theory reducing all of physics, known and unknown, to the interactions of one elementary quantum field.

Pascual Jordan, “Das Rätsel der Materie” in Frankfurter Allgmeine Zeitung of 4 December 1971. An even more positive assessment is to be found in the same day’s Frankfurter Rundschau. I was able to obtain an overview of the coverage of Heisenberg’s theory in the German Press with the help of the Mediendokumentation at the Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach.

Obituary for Heisenberg in Der Spiegel of 9 February 1976, p. 156.

I would like to thank Radin Dardashti for helping me trace the origin of this term, which I have adopted for the title of this book.
