Applications and Usability of Interactive TV (jAUTI 2018)

Abstract

In this work we present “DomoiTV”, a home automation system and its communication protocol with a graphic interface for the Brazilian digital terrestrial television standard ISDB-Tb.

This project is divided into three main phases, the design and implementation of the home automation system, the development of the graphic interface for DTT and the communication protocol between these two areas.

For the automation phase, six areas are covered: intrusion alarms, technical alarms, lighting control, blinds and shades control, access to cameras, and pre-programmed scenarios. To meet the requirements of these six areas, a controller with different sensors and actuators are installed providing a safe, comfortable and controlled environment.

The user interface, designed as an interactive TV application based on the Ginga middleware, is the way to represent the automation devices installed, therefore the user can visualize the status of each sensor and take action on its actuators. In addition, a mobile user application was implemented to provide interoperability and usability in multiple devices.

The communication protocol is developed in order to manage data sent from the application through TCP communication; and by means of a translator the information is redirected to a Real-Time cloud database, where the controller has access to complete the communication between both parties.

Testing of operation and Start-up of the automation system is carried out, in addition to the application usability tests on several devices. The final system resulted in an integrated, robust and reliable system in terms of operation; and friendly and intuitive to the user.

Notes

  1. 1.

Digital television allows the broadcasting of High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) programming through the same transmission channel.

  2. 2.

Ginga middleware is a heterogeneous software layer that provides interactivity for the Brazilian ISDB-Tb standard and for IPTV according to the International Union of Telecommunications.

  3. 3.

For the control signals the twisted pair cable is used as a guided transmission medium, while for the power lines, Topflex cable is used for electrical installations.

  4. 4.

The standard 802.11 (Wi-Fi) is used as a non-guided transmission medium.

  5. 5.

The AENOR EA0026 standard qualifies the facilities according to their automation level (high, medium or low), according to the installed devices and the covered applications, giving a score according to their evaluation table.

  6. 6.

Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is used to send a data flow, ensuring that the data is delivered to its destination in the same order in which they were transmitted and without errors. It also provides a mechanism to distinguish different applications within the same machine, through the concept of ports.

  7. 7.

The data corresponds to the interactive application and the status of the variables handled by the automation system.

  8. 8.

The Likert scale is a psychometric scale to evaluate the opinions and attitudes of a person in front of a topic. When responding to an item on the Likert scale, the user responds specifically based on their level of agreement or disagreement.

  9. 9.

The concept of digital natives and digital immigrants is used to describe the generational change in which people are defined by the technological culture with which they are familiar. Given that digital natives are people who were born in the digital era and grew up using technology, while digital immigrants are people who have adapted to this medium.
