Abstract
This chapter describes the endoscopic procedures for removal of esophageal foreign bodies. Included is an introduction that outlines the indications, risks, alternatives, key steps, equipment needed, and variations in technique for the procedure, namely the use of rigid versus flexible endoscopes and the use of different types of retrieval devices. A template operative dictation is then included, providing the reader with a detailed operative report that is similar to what would be found in the patient medical record. A description is provided of the following critical concepts for this procedure: patient positioning with neck extended, intubation of upper esophageal sphincter under direct visualization, and manipulation of foreign body with long grasping forceps.
