Abstract
A leading global conservation organisation, WWF was launched in 1961. Among the WWF’s earliest projects were its contribution to the protection of the Galápagos Islands and the Doñana National Park in Spain. Some of WWF’s best-known campaigns started in the 1970s, including the programmes to save tigers, rhinos, and giant pandas. The efforts of WWF were instrumental in banning commercial whaling and designating the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary. In 2007 WWF started Earth Hour, an event intended to raise global awareness of climate change. Today WWF is one of the most respected conservation organisations with millions of supporters all over the world, and projects running in more than 100 countries.
