Wild Fruits: Composition, Nutritional Value and Products

Abstract

Borassus flabellifer Linn., of the Arecaceae family is widely distributed and cultivated in Africa and South Asian countries. Traditionally the different parts of the plant such as root, leaves, fruit, and seeds are utilized in management of a variety of human ailments. The fruit of Boraassus flabellifer is considered among the less well documented tropical wild edible fruits. The nutritional analysis of the fruit revealed the presence of calcium, ascorbic acid, maltose, starch, fats, reducing and non-reducing sugars and carbohydrate. The phytochemicals extracted from Borassus flabellifer include polyphenols, organo-sulfur compounds, carotenoids, alkaloids, polysaccharide, steroidal glycosides, abuminoids, triterpene, and saponins. Due to the presence of these bioactive ingredients, the plant possessed anti-inflammatory anti-bacterial activity, anti-oxidant, antidiabetic and antihyperlipidemic activities. This chapter explored the presence of various phytochemicals, nutritional value, pharmacological activities and uses of Borassus flabellifer.
