Abstract
This chapter explores prosodic behaviour in dubbed dialogue from an empirical perspective. A bilingual corpus-based study is employed to analyse the prosodic rendition of characters in a dubbed sitcom with a threefold purpose: to detect prevailing trends in the use of dubbed prosody, to find regularities in the conveyance of attitudinal meaning and to assess the (un)naturalness of prosodic delivery. The results obtained from the analysis bring the specificities of dubbed prosody to the fore and offer insights into the ways in which this rendition can affect the quality of the final outcome. The last sections evaluate the breach between dubbed and non-dubbed oral speech by comparing their evolution and coming of age and encourage a critical reflection on the dubbing actor’s task and the dubbing process itself.
