Abstract
Aquatic sports are those that are based in water as opposed to on land. Aquatic sports trauma management deals with a unique set of injuries and poses some significant challenges to evaluation and management due to the nature of the aquatic environment. It is important to understand the injury types and challenges for injury evaluation for each specific aquatic sport. The sports of swimming, diving, water polo, waterskiing, wakeboarding, scuba diving, and surfing are outlined in this chapter. Evaluation and treatment of an injury should take place out of the water (on land or in an aquatic vessel). Someone certified in lifeguarding should be available whenever possible during aquatic sport events to ensure safe extrication and prompt evaluation during serious illness or trauma.
