Abstract
The theoretical concept of quasicrystals (Levine and Steinhardt in Phys Rev Lett 53:2477–2480, 1984) and the contemporary experimental breakthrough (Shechtman et al. in Phys Rev Lett 53:1951–1953, 1984) happened about 35 years ago. Since then, several new types of quasicrystalline materials have been synthesized in the laboratory under controlled protocols designed to avoid solidification of material having a periodic structure typical of a crystal.
