Technology and Global Public Health

Abstract

In response to the current global push to increasingly incorporate technology into the delivery of healthcare, which, in many parts of the world, is horribly expensive, inefficient, and ineffective, many countries are currently working on incorporating these advances, which the United Nations (UN) tasked them with through their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This chapter specifically focuses on the means through which Taiwan is doing just that by examining specific technologies that help to overcome challenges faced by the Taiwanese population given their unique climate and geography. These technologies are meant to benefit people both on an individual level, such as with smartphone applications, or “apps,” as well as on a population level, such as methodologies to help prevent the spread of dengue fever. We hope other countries can adopt some of these methods in a way that benefits their specific population health challenges.
