Abstract
We design an interactive pavement as an attempt to convert our living environment into a medium for conveying information. Our idea to create a pavement as a means for conveying information is developing a mechanism that generates a subtle wave-like movement on the pavement surface. We expect that a person standing on it will be able to detect the movement with his/her feet and know the implication instantly. The objective of this work is to show an example of a digital function smoothly integrated into our daily environment. We implement our first prototype and examine its effectiveness by making a series of observations and performing system evaluation tests. We verify that the prototype provides an intuitive haptic experience and participants can identify directional patterns without requiring further instruction.
