Abstract

Community-based genome resources will be fundamentally important if pine genomics research is going to advance at a rate needed to genetically improve pine species for commodity production and also to facilitate conservation and restoration programs. The paramount resource is the reference genome sequence; yet as of 2021, only three genome sequences have been completed, published and released into the public domain; P. taeda, P. lambertiana and P.pinaster. Next generation sequencing technologies and computational methods for assembly and annotation are now well-developed for pines. A strategic plan must be developed so that a global and well-coordinated effort begins to sequence many, if not all, pine genomes.
