Abstract
This chapter synthesises the results of recent research in the Lower Senegal Valley. Palaeolithic surveys in the second half of the 20th century indicated the presence of Stone Age occupations of this landscape and described their broad character. Renewed survey in the region has helped refine this characterisation, illustrating the widespread presence of surface Middle Stone Age assemblages, typified by the use of Levallois and Discoidal reduction schemes. Excavation at Ndiayène Pendao provides stratified evidence for Middle Stone Age inhabitation of the region dating to the very end of the Late Pleistocene ca. 12 thousand years ago.
