Summary
The energetics of active ion transport have been analyzed in terms of linear non equilibrium thermodynamics. It is shown that the flux ratio may fail to evaluate the forces producing transport. For active sodium transport in epithelia both transport and oxygen consumption are linear functions of the electrical potential difference; this permitted a calculation of the free energy of the metabolic driving reaction.
