Abstract

A high-resolution calcareous nannofossil analysis has been performed on three upper Callovian–lower Oxfordian GSSP candidate sections from the Subalpine Basin (Thoux, Savournon, St Pierre d’Argençon; southeastern France) to test the reliability and precision of calcareous nannofossils as proxies for the Callovian–Oxfordian (C–O) boundary. The results of the study indicate that the zonal marker species Stephanolithion bigoti maximum, reported from the upper Lamberti ammonite Zone to the Mariae ammonite Zone in previous literature, can be reliably identified only with accurate biometric measurements. In the French sections, this subspecies does not occur until the Praecordatum Subzone. The size increase in specimens of S. bigoti observed across the C–O boundary was probably mistaken for genuine S. bigotimaximum, generating confusion in the calibration and correlation of this biohorizon.
