Abstract
After reviewing the literature dealing with the relationship between health knowledge and health behavior, this paper presents the results of a survey of sunbathers. Each sunbather was asked to complete the Suntanning Knowledge Scale as well as to provide behavioral, attitudinal, and demographic information. The data were analyzed to determine the extent to which the predictor variables -suntanning knowledge, tan importance, sunbathing frequency, sunbathing duration, sunburn experienced, skin color, sex, income, education, and age - are related to the use of items designed to protect the skin from sun damage. The results revealed that the criterion variables are directly related to suntanning knowledge and indirectly related to sunbathing duration.
