Abstract
In this overview about clinical and biologic concepts of asymptomatic cerebrovascular disease and carotid artery stenosis, we review the evolution of the definition of asymptomatic cerebrovascular disease, the clinical significance of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis and bruit, major surgical and endovascular trials of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis, predictive importance of carotid artery plaque morphology, and future directions that the field may take. Asymptomatic carotid artery disease remains a topic of debate and there is a need for additional scientific study.
