Abstract
Professional regulation is the legitimate and appropriate means – governmental, professional, private, and individual – whereby order, identity, consistency, and control are brought to the profession. Professional regulation for advanced nursing practice consists of the rules and policies that recognize the advanced practice nurse and officially credentials advanced practice nurses for practice. This chapter describes the significance of having appropriate regulatory mechanisms in place for professional practice to support advanced practice nurses to the full potential of their role within the context of a country’s healthcare system and settings. It begins with the International Council of Nurses guidelines for establishing advanced nursing practice professional regulation. Additional regulatory frameworks and models are offered in order to provide examples to consult in the process of formalizing the policies and processes associated with regulation. Topics relevant to advanced nursing practice credentialing including accreditation, certification, licensure, registration, and endorsement are discussed. The chapter concludes with a comprehensive overview of maintaining practice competence.
