Abstract

In 1595 Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) was the first to posit the existence of a planet between Mars and Jupiter , but it was the Swiss astronomer and mathematician Jacob Bernoulli (1655–1705; Fig. 1.1) who first offered actual numbers relating to its orbital properties.
