Abstract
This chapter begins the analysis of love in modern cultures throughout the world. Particularly, it analyzes Western conceptualizations of romantic love in both North America and Europe. As time has progressed, ideas and beliefs about love, sex, and marriage have shifted immensely. Openness to sexuality has increased as has the concept of choosing one’s own spouse rather than leaving that decision to one’s parents. Not only that, the way the concept of love as it is expressed has changed as well. These differences are highlighted as this chapter looks at love in the context of marriage and sex as well as explores ideals that people in Western countries have regarding romantic love.
