Abstract

We first characterize creativity in design from an information-processing perspective and analyze analogical thinking as a core process of design creativity. Then, we describe a computational theory of analogical design called model-based analogy. Next, we summarize empirical results from in situ observations of analogical thinking in biologically inspired design. Then, we analyze biologically inspired design from the viewpoint of model-based analogy. Finally, we briefly reflect on computational creativity research on analogical design.
