Abstract

Since Doctors Wolf and Shinya began performing the first colonoscopies and polypectomies in the 1960s, the medical community has been expanding what can be done in this arena. With improved endoscopic techniques comes more accurate diagnosis of disease, and the capacity to treat colonic pathology in a less invasive fashion. Both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy are constantly evolving. In order to better sample, mark, recognize, and remove pathology, we must use the most effective equipment. This chapter will discuss the instruments necessary for many colonoscopic techniques, including biopsy, tattoo, endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, narrow band imaging, and chromoendoscopy.
