Abstract

History has taught us that comets have always attracted attention, often feared but never ignored. On many occasions, a visitation from the depths of space has provoked an unprecedented level of interest, drawing in at times a global audience, with those who rarely cast an eye skywards also caught up in the moment. For the discoverer of a new comet there is instant recognition, with the person’s name being attached and an automatic place in a hall of fame that money just can’t buy.
