Abstract
Waste management is a major challenge faced by Fiji and other SIDS. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the Net Energy Balance of using municipal solid waste (MSW) for producing power on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. The research evaluates the Net Energy Balance associated with the conversion of MSW into useful power through mass incineration technique using a suitably—located thermal incineration power plant. The total mass of MSW generated in Fiji in 2012 was 48,741 tonnes. Using this feedstock, the Net Energy Balance was determined for MSW originating from each town and city in Fiji, and transported to a central incineration plant at Naboro Landfill site. The mean weighted NEB was found to be 16.76 MJ/kg.
