The Role of Educators in Quality Improvement

Abstract

Healthcare delivery systems are under increasing pressure to deliver high-value healthcare, which is defined as the best healthcare outcomes at the lowest cost. Quality improvement strategies include continuous quality improvement, plan-do-study-act, root cause analysis, and Lean Six Sigma methodology. According to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, practice-based learning and improvement should be integrated into residency training programs. There are several options to integrate a quality improvement curriculum through resident teaching conferences, morning report, clinical case conferences, grand rounds lectures, or integrated into morbidity and mortality conferences. While barriers to implementation may include time, resources, resident and faculty involvement, and institutional buy-in, commitment to continuous quality improvement requires an interdisciplinary teamwork and comprehensive approach.
