Abstract

There is no doubt that Mathematics, next to Electronics and Electrical Engineering, is one of the founding pillars of Informatics. Historically, Informatics might even be seen as a particular aspect of Applied Mathematics. For example, as relatively recently as the 1990s, RWTH Aachen in Germany had a Professorial Chair entitled Praktische Mathematik, insbesondere Informatik which translates to Applied Mathematics, in particular Informatics. There is no doubt, though, that Informatics has come of age and has grown into its own scientific and engineering discipline that trains its own professionals. But this does not mean that the mathematical roots of that discipline have become less relevant over time, quite the contrary. Those foundations of Informatics that are particularly well understood and established are typically characterized by a solid mathematical core.

There is no silver bullet for problem solving in Advanced Informatics.
