Abstract

This article reviews the epidemiology, anatomy, clinical presentation, and surgical management of the most common pediatric hernias. The optimal management of indirect inguinal hernias remains controversial, specifically in the management of low birth weight/premature infants, contralateral explorations, incarcerated hernias, and laparoscopic versus open repair. These controversial topics as well as commonly used operative techniques to repair an indirect inguinal hernia are discussed in detail. Umbilical hernias, as well as less commonly seen pediatric hernias, such as direct inguinal hernias, femoral hernias, and epigastric hernias, are also discussed.
