Abstract

This paper reports on a study of formal definition of ruled surfaces, including some frequently used types in constructed architecture. It focuses on their generation with geometrically based algorithms. The implicit premises assumed by most of CAD and BIM programs have been analyzed. We have used Grasshopper, a graphical algorithm editor integrated with Rhinoceros, a wide-spread modeling software based on NURBS (Non Uniform Rational B-Splines). There are some types of surfaces that can’t be directly modeled with the available standard free-form tools. This algorithm based software can be used to generate as many rulings as needed to an accurate enough definition.
