Abstract

In the 1970s it was crusading journalism which brought down Republican President Nixon following the Watergate scandal. However, Jeff Jarvis makes the argument that any attempt for the press to bring down the current President, Donald Trump, would be to sign their own death warrant.

Instead, in this chapter, Jarvis sets out an agenda for reinventing journalism. It’s a journalism of civic engagement, of listening, of diversity, and one which abandons the idea of journalists as gatekeepers. This involves investment in new services to serve new communities and building new relationships. This includes conservative America. In reaching out to these groups, Facebook can be a help not a hindrance in the conversation that needs to be had about new ways of doing journalism.
