Partial Knee Arthroplasty for Older-Aged Patients

Abstract

Partial knee arthroplasty (PKA) was initially indicated in patients older than 60 years old for localized unicompartmental osteoarthritis, but with the good results of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and greater risk of revision of PKA compared to TKA, TKA became more popular to treat localized osteoarthritis in older-aged patients. More recently, however, several studies have demonstrated an increased surgical risk and cost of TKA compared to PKA. As such, in this chapter, we will review why and when we should perform a PKA, surgical points to pay attention, and outpatient surgery for older-aged patients suffering from localized osteoarthritis. We define “older patient” as those over 70 years of age and conclude that this may be the best group for PKA.
