Abstract

This chapter gives a broad overview of Hindu responses to Pope Francis and contextualizes these responses in terms of Hindu history and theology, specifically in terms of the Hindu history of being on the receiving end of Christian proselytization and the Hindu theology of “many paths to a common goal,” found, for example, in the Ramakrishna tradition of which the author is an adherent. The chapter argues that Hindu responses to Pope Francis are diverse, but typically converge around a theme of “cautious hope” for improved relations between traditions.
