Zusammenfassung

Die Tatsache, daß sich Gesellschaften und soziale Organisationen, die soziale Umwelt von Menschen im Laufe der Zeit verändern können, ist jedermann vertraut. Die Frage nach den Ursachen und dem Verlauf dieser Veränderungen wird in der Soziologie als das Problem des sozialen Wandels diskutiert. Ähnlich wie die soziale Ungleichheit gehört der soziale Wandel zu den klassischen und grundlegenden Problemstellungen, denen schon die Bemühungen von Gesellschaftstheoretikern und Sozialphilosophen galten, bevor sich die Soziologie als eigenständige akademische Disziplin etablieren konnte. Aber auch die erfahrungswissenschaftlich orientierte Soziologie hat noch keine endgültige und einheitliche theoretische Antwort auf die Frage nach der Erklärung und Analyse des sozialen Wandels finden können, und die Fragestellung ist vermutlich zu umfassend und vielseitig, als daß man dies in der nächsten Zukunft auch erwarten könnte.
