Zu den Haupträumen einer Wohnung oder eines Wohnhauses, wie Wohn-, Eß-, Schlaf- und Kinderzimmer, gehören je nach Größe des Grundrisses Wirtschafts-, Sanitär- und Sonderräume. Nach ihrer Funktion werden unterschieden:

Wirtschaftsräume. Küche, Speisekammer, Kühlraum, Hausarbeitsraum, auch Gemeinschaftswaschraum und Trockenraum.

Sanitärräume. WC, Waschraum, Bad, Dusche, Hausschwimmbad, Sauna, auch Solarium und Gymnastikraum.
