Zusammenfassung
Große Städte haben historisch eine zentrale Rolle für Zuwanderer in Industrieländer gespielt, da dort billiger Wohnraum und Arbeit in Manufakturbetrieben angeboten wurden (Burgess 1925/1967). In den letzten Jahrzehnten haben Industriebetriebe einen großen Anteil der Zuwanderer aufgenommen. Durch gewerkschaftliche Organisierung bekamen Zuwanderer einen Zugang in die industriellen Kernsektoren und darüber hinaus auch die Möglichkeit zur politischen Beteiligung (Lupsha 1976; Shefter 1976). Zusätzliche Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten entwickelten sich in ethnischen Nischen, in dener. die Zuwanderer als selbständige Unternehmer auftraten (Bonacich 1973; Light 1984; Stark/Taylor 1988). US-amerikanische Forschungen belegen, daß Zuwanderer in Städte einen höheren sozialen Status erreichen als diejenigen, die sich in nicht-urbanen Gebieten angesiedelt haben (Lieberson 1980; Chiswick 1978; 1993). Allerdings haben sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten die städtischen Wirtschaften stark gewandelt, was auch durch das Angebot an verfügbarem Raum in den urbanen Zentren bestimmt wurde. So sind die Beschäftigungen in der Industrie stark zurückgegangen, während die Nachfrage nach Tätigkeiten in den Bereichen Finanzen, Verwaltung, Kommunikation und Information sowie Kontrolle und Management zugenommen haben (Sassen 1990a;1991). Diese Veränderungen sind Aspekte eines Restrukturierungsprozesses der städtischen Wirtschaft, in dem die neu nachgefragten Tätigkeiten auch durch ihre veränderte Reichweite, ihre Globalisierung, bestimmt werden (Fainstein/Fainstein 1982; 1989; Fainstein 1990). Großstädte wurden attraktive Ansiedlungen für Unternehmenszentralen und durch die Veränderung des Beschäftigungsprofils gentrifiziert (Smith/Williams 1986; Beauregard 1991).
