Zusammenfassung
Als Wissenschaft vom Seienden zielt die Ontologie auf Begründung, die aussagekräftig nicht beim Sekundären geleistet werden kann. Die sich hieraus ergebende Frage nach dem primär Seienden beantwortet Leibniz wie die Tradition seit Aristoteles mit: die Einzelsubstanz. Weil er in der Begründungsfrage radikal bis zum letzten Ursprung vordringen möchte, gelangt er zu einem besonderen Substanzbegriff.
