Zusammenfassung

Multikulturelle oder interkulturelle Teams, also Teams, die aus Individuen unterschiedlicher kultureller Herkunft bestehen, sind seit geraumer Zeit Gegenstand der Forschung. Anfänglich standen vor allem negative Auswirkungen der kulturellen Diversität auf die Teamleistung im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtung. So schrieb beispielsweise Fiedler im Jahr 1966 „The problem of cultural heterogeneity is likewise a focal concern in international business and governmental organization (…)“ (Fiedler 1966: 238). Der Forscher ging davon aus, dass multikulturelle Teams eine schwächere Leistung als monokulturelle Teams erbringen. Die Ergebnisse seiner Studie bestätigten diese Erwartungen nicht. Zwischen beiden Teamarten konnten keine Leistungsunterschiede festgestellt werden. Die aus der heutigen Perspektive als logisch erscheinende Implikation dieser Erkenntnisse, dass eine differenzierte Betrachtung von kultureller Diversität vonnöten ist, wurde vom Autor nicht beachtet. Als Erklärung der erwartungswidrigen Befunde hielt er stattdessen fest: „These results suggest the need for reevaluating the importance of the communication variable in group interactions“ (ebd.: 260).
