Abstract
Recent economic history has been marked by the intensification of the commercial and financial opening up of national economies. The economic forces at work seem to be imposing a “Great Retransformation” of capitalism – to use a “Polanyi-style dialectic” – a reduction in State intervention in favour of the reintroduction of incentive mechanisms based on the guiding ideal of pure and perfect competition.
